Homemade Buttermilk Ranch Dressing
Description
Homemade Buttermilk Ranch Dressing brings together mayonnaise and sour cream as a creamy base with buttermilk to add acidity and a mild tang. The dressing incorporates a combination of fresh herbs—parsley, dill, and chives—that lend a fresh and green flavor. Minced garlic and lemon juice deepen the flavor profile, while a blend of garlic powder, onion powder, dry mustard powder, kosher salt, black pepper, and a touch of cayenne pepper add subtle warmth and complexity. It is whisked until smooth and allowed to chill for about an hour to let the flavors meld.
The texture is creamy yet pourable, suitable as a salad dressing, dip, or sauce. The herbs provide freshness, which complements the creamy tang, and the cayenne gives a slight kick that sets this ranch apart from typical versions.
Serve it alongside salads, as a dip for vegetables or chips, or with grilled meats. The balance of fresh herbs and dairy components makes it adaptable for many dishes that call for ranch dressing.
For substitutions, dried herbs can be used in adjusted quantities, and buttermilk can be replaced with whole milk plus extra lemon juice for acidity. Garlic powder can be increased if fresh garlic is unavailable. These adjustments allow flexibility while maintaining the dressing's characteristic flavor.
Ingredients
- 1 cup mayonnaise
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 1 teaspoon garlic minced
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/4 teaspoon dry mustard powder
- 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 3 tablespoons parsley minced, fresh
- 2 tablespoons dill minced, fresh
- 1 teaspoon chive minced, fresh
Instructions
- Add all ingredients in a medium bowl and whisk until combined! Taste it and see if you want to add any more salt. Refrigerate for about an hour before serving, to give the flavors a chance to marry. Or don't. It will still taste great!
- See notes about substitutions.
Notes
- Replace fresh parsley, dill, and chives with 2 teaspoons dried parsley, 1 teaspoon dried dill, and 1/2 teaspoon dried chives if needed.
- If fresh garlic isn't available, increase the garlic powder to 3/4 or 1 teaspoon.
- Use whole milk plus 1½ teaspoons lemon juice instead of buttermilk as a substitute.
