Homemade Chex Mix

This Homemade Chex Mix is a crunchy, savory snack blend combining corn, rice, and wheat Chex cereals with pretzels, bagel chips, and rye chips. Coated in a spiced butter and Worcestershire sauce mixture, it is baked slowly until crisp and flavorful. The seasoning blend of garlic powder and seasoned salt enhances the toasted grains and crunchy snacks, creating a balanced mix ideal for casual snacking and parties. Adjusting ingredient sizes and seasoning ensures even coating and the right saltiness.

Description

The snack mix merges a variety of crispy components including three types of Chex cereal with pretzels, bagel chips, and rye chips, offering a range of textures and subtle flavor contrasts. The Butter-based seasoning includes Worcestershire sauce and spices that deliver a savory, slightly tangy coating that browns and crisps during the low-temperature baking process. Stirring every 15 minutes during baking helps distribute heat and flavor evenly throughout.

The result is a crunchy, savory snack that remains crisp and well-seasoned, suitable for munching during gatherings or as a casual treat. Variations in the snack components allow personalization or substitutions while maintaining the overall balance of textures and flavors.

To achieve the best flavor distribution, add seasoning gradually when mixing to avoid soggy patches and uneven taste. The mix stores well for up to a month when kept airtight, preserving the crunchy contrast of cereals and chips.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 3 cups corn chex
  • 3 cups rice chex cereal
  • 3 cups wheat chex
  • 1 cup pretzels Tiny Twist brand
  • 1 cup bagel chips broken into small pieces
  • 1 cup rye chips broken into small pieces
  • 8 TBS butter melted
  • 2 ½ TBS Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 TBS seasoned salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 250 degrees.
  2. If you do not have a roasting pan, line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. If you have a large metal roasting pan, no need to line with parchment paper.
  3. Mix all of your snack items – cereal, pretzels, rye chips, and bagel chips in a large bowl.
  4. Combine melted butter, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and seasoned salt in a bowl until well combined.
  5. Add butter mixture to the cereal mixture, a little bit at a time, stirring it in to evenly combine.
  6. Pour coated cereal in large roasting pan or on the parchment lined baking sheet. Shake quickly to let cereal mixture settle into a layer.
  7. Bake in oven for 1 hour, stirring the mixture every 15 minutes. If mixture is still soggy after 1 hour, add 15 more minutes.
  8. Remove from oven, remove from pan and cool on the piece of parchment paper. If using a roasting pan, lay out on pieces of paper towels or parchment paper to cool for 15 minutes.
  9. Enjoy immediately or up to four weeks, stored in an airtight container.

Notes

  • Add the seasoning gradually in portions while mixing to ensure all pieces are evenly coated and avoid sogginess.
  • You can substitute snack components with similar volume alternatives, such as Cheerios for Chex, but maintain the same quantities for balanced seasoning.
  • Use small-sized pretzels for better integration throughout the mix, enhancing texture with consistent crunch in every bite.
  • Break bagel chips and rye chips into small pieces to increase coverage and distribute flavor in each serving.
