Homemade Chex Mix
Description
Homemade Chex Mix starts with equal parts corn, rice, and wheat Chex cereal mixed with cheese crackers, mini pretzels, and nuts to provide a variety of crunchy textures. The seasoning combines melted butter, Worcestershire sauce, seasoned salt, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, and optional Tabasco for a layered, savory taste with a hint of heat. Tossing the dry ingredients in the butter mixture ensures even coating.
Baking the mixture at 250°F for an hour while stirring every 20 minutes crisps the snacks without burning, resulting in a balanced crunch. Cooling before serving allows flavors to set and prevents sogginess. The combination of salty, tangy, and spicy flavors complements the varied snack pieces.
This snack mix is suitable for casual gatherings, parties, or everyday snacking. It can be made ahead and stored in airtight containers for up to two weeks, maintaining its texture and flavor. For longer storage, freezing is viable for up to three months. Various mix-ins and seasoning adjustments, such as substituting nuts or adding hot sauce, allow customization.
Alternate cooking methods like microwave or slow cooker offer flexible preparation options. Adjust spices to taste for preferred heat levels. The recipe provides a base to tailor both ingredients and seasoning to individual preferences.
Ingredients
- 9 cups Chex cereal (I use use equal parts corn, rice, and wheat Chex)
- 1 1/2 cups cheese crackers
- 1 1/2 cups mini pretzels twists
- 1 cup mixed nuts
Seasoning:
- ½ cup butter melted, unsalted
- 3 Tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 2 teaspoons seasoned salt (I recommend Lawry’s brand)
- 1 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper (for spice) or smoked paprika
- 1 tablespoon Tabasco sauce optional, or hot pepper sauce
Instructions
- Combine dry snacks: Place the cereal, cheese crackers, pretzels and nuts into a large bowl.
- Seasoning: Mix together the melted butter, Worcestershire sauce, seasoned salt, garlic powder, onion powder and cayenne. Slowly drizzle the butter mixture over the cereal, while tossing gently, to coat.
- Bake: Preheat the oven 250°F. Transfer the Chex Mix onto two baking sheets, spreading it into an even layer. Bake for 1 hour, stirring every 20 minutes.
- Remove from oven and allow to cool before serving.
Notes
- Store Chex Mix in an airtight container for up to two weeks to maintain freshness.
- Freeze leftovers in freezer-safe bags or containers for up to three months.
- Adjust mix-ins by substituting different nuts, crackers, or cereals in a 1:1 ratio.
- Try microwave or slow cooker methods as alternatives to baking for convenience.
- Increase heat by adding 1-2 tablespoons of hot sauce to the seasoning mixture if desired.
