Homemade Chili Sauce Recipe
Description
The recipe combines tomato paste with water to adjust thickness, brown sugar and honey for sweetness, apple cider vinegar for acidity, and a blend of spices including paprika, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, allspice, cinnamon, and cloves. Red pepper flakes add mild heat, but heat can be increased by substituting cayenne or additional hot sauce.
Simmering the mixture allows the flavors to develop and integrate, resulting in a well-balanced sauce with a smooth texture. The syrupy sauce offers layers of sweet, tangy, and faintly spicy notes, useful for dipping or as a topping condiment.
Stored refrigerated, this sauce keeps well for several weeks, making it a convenient homemade condiment option that can adjust to preferred heat levels by modifying seasonings or thickness by adding more water.
About 2 cups of sauce are yielded, suitable for small batch use or to accompany various dishes needing a mildly spiced tomato-based sauce.
Ingredients
- 6 ounces tomato paste 1 can
- water 1/4 to 1/2 cup water, or more as needed, for thinning
