Homemade Cornbread Recipe
Description
The recipe blends equal parts cornmeal and all-purpose flour with sugar, salt, and baking powder for leavening. Wet ingredients include egg, milk, and vegetable oil, providing moisture and richness. Baking at a high temperature produces a golden top with a light crumb inside. The cornbread is simple but versatile, offering the classic cornmeal flavor balanced by the sweetness and tender texture derived from sugar and oil.
The finished bread can be sliced and served warm or at room temperature with chili, barbecue, or Southern-style cuisine. Its moderately sweet flavor pairs well with spicy or savory dishes and can also be used as a base for stuffing.
Leftovers store well in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week, maintaining freshness without refrigeration. This ease of storage makes it convenient to prepare in advance for meal accompaniment.
