Homemade Cranberry Apple Sauce

Homemade Cranberry Apple Sauce combines fresh cranberries and chopped apples cooked with orange juice, cranberry juice, apple cider, and maple syrup until the cranberries soften and the sauce thickens. The mix balances tart and sweet flavors with fruity complexity. It can be served warm or cold, making it suitable for holiday meals or everyday use.

Description

This Cranberry Apple Sauce uses tart cranberries and a combination of McIntosh and Granny Smith apples simmered together with orange juice (including pulp), cranberry juice, apple cider, and maple syrup. The cooking process breaks down the fruits, allowing cranberries to pop and release their juices, resulting in a thickened sauce with a balance of tartness from the cranberries and apples and sweetness from the maple syrup.

The sauce can be prepared on the stovetop over medium heat for 20 to 25 minutes or made ahead in a slow cooker cooked on high for about three hours. Alternatively, an Instant Pot may be used to pressure cook the ingredients quickly, with a natural release and a final simmer to reach desired thickness.

This versatile sauce is traditionally served with Thanksgiving dishes but can accompany any meal needing a touch of fruity acidity and sweetness. It can be stored in airtight containers and served warm or cold according to preference.
