Homemade Cranberry Sauce

This homemade cranberry sauce cooks cranberries with sugar, water, a pinch of salt, cinnamon, and vanilla extract into a tangy, sweet condiment. The recipe provides options for a fully broken-down sauce or a whole-berry version retaining some texture. Its bright flavor and smooth or chunky consistency make it a classic accompaniment to meats and holiday dishes.

Description

The Homemade Cranberry Sauce consists primarily of fresh or frozen cranberries simmered in a syrup made from sugar and water. Bringing the sweetened water to a boil dissolves the sugar before adding the cranberries, which cook until the skins burst releasing tart juices that balance the sweetness. A pinch of salt, cinnamon, and vanilla extract adds depth and aroma to the sauce. For a smoother texture, all the cranberries are cooked until broken down, while a whole-berry variation involves adding some cranberries later to maintain intact berries for more bite and visual contrast.

The finished sauce is cool and glossy, offering a bright tartness that can cut through rich meats like turkey or pork. Its vibrant red color and rich aroma are characteristic of homemade cranberry sauce traditionally served during holidays but also suited to year-round meals.

Rinsing and sorting the cranberries before cooking ensures a clean flavor and removes any damaged or soft fruit. Both fresh and frozen cranberries yield good results, with slight texture variation.
