Homemade Cranberry Sauce (Fresh or Frozen!)
Description
Homemade Cranberry Sauce combines granulated sugar with orange juice and water brought to a gentle boil, dissolving the sugar before adding fresh or frozen cranberries and optional orange zest. As the mixture simmers, the cranberries soften and burst, thickening the sauce and blending flavors. The resulting texture is thick, with partially mashed berries contributing a rustic consistency.
The orange juice and zest add a fragrant and slightly zesty dimension that uplifts the natural tartness of cranberries. Cooking times of 8 to 12 minutes allow sufficient bursting and reduction, which can be adjusted depending on desired thickness.
Once cooled to room temperature, the sauce is transferred to an airtight container and refrigerated to firm up further and develop flavors. It can be served chilled alongside roasted meats, holiday dishes, or as a spread.
Flavor brightness can be adjusted by varying the proportion of orange juice to water for more or less citrus character, enabling customization based on taste preferences.
Ingredients
- 1 cup sugar
- ¾ cup orange juice
- ¼ cup water
- 4 cups Cranberry one 12-oz package, fresh or frozen
- 2 teaspoons orange zest optional
Instructions
- If using fresh cranberries, rinse and drain.
- To a large pot over medium-low heat, add 1 cup of sugar, ¾ cup of orange juice, and ¼ cup of water. Bring to a gentle boil to dissolve the sugar for 2 to 3 minutes.
- Add 12 oz of cranberries and 2 teaspoons of orange zest and simmer for 8 to 12 minutes until cranberries have burst. Mash with the flat edge of a spoon.
- Let it cool to room temperature, then transfer it to an airtight container and refrigerate. Enjoy!
Notes
- Adjust the tartness and brightness of the sauce by increasing or decreasing the orange juice relative to water.
- If using fresh cranberries, rinse and drain before cooking for cleanliness.
- Cool the sauce completely before refrigerating to allow it to thicken properly.
- Store cranberry sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator and consume within a few days for best freshness.
