Homemade Crockpot Apple Butter

Homemade Crockpot Apple Butter transforms softer sweet apples into a thick, spiced spread by slow cooking with brown and granulated sugar and a blend of cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and cloves. Lemon juice adds brightness while apple cider enhances moisture and flavor. The extended low-heat cooking breaks down the fruit to a smooth, rich consistency that's ideal as a spread or topping.

Description

This recipe begins by peeling, coring, and chopping soft apple varieties that develop well during slow cooking. All ingredients, including sugars and warm spices, are combined in a slow cooker and cooked on low for 6 to 8 hours to thoroughly soften the apples and meld the flavors. The mixture is then pureed to a smooth texture.

If the apple butter is not thick enough after pureeing, it can be returned to the crockpot uncovered and cooked further to achieve the desired consistency, with regular stirring to avoid scorching. Cooling completely before storing helps maintain its texture. The apple butter can be refrigerated and also freezes well for longer storage.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 3 lbs apple softer, sweet varieties
  • 2/3 cup light brown sugar , packed
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 3/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp allspice
  • 1/2 tsp cloves ground
  • 1 Tbsp lemon juice
  • salt dash
  • 3/4 cup apple cider

Instructions

  1. Peel, core and chop apples. Add all ingredients to slow cooker and stir until well mixed.
  2. Cover and cook on low setting 6-8 hours or until the butter is thickened and broken down.  Overnight works well for this too.
  3. Transfer to a food processor to purée.
  4. If apple butter is too thin, transfer back to crockpot, remove lid and cook on low until thickened. Stir often as apple butter thickens to prevent scorching.
  5. Cool completely and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.  Apple butter can be frozen as well.

Notes

  • This recipe makes approximately 3 to 3½ cups of apple butter; a serving is about 1 tablespoon.
  • Soft, sweet apple varieties work best for this recipe to achieve a naturally sweet, smooth apple butter.
  • After pureeing, if the apple butter is too thin, continue cooking uncovered on low, stirring often to thicken without burning.
  • Apple butter can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator and freezes well for longer preservation.
