Homemade Croutons

Homemade Croutons are cubed, crusty bread seasoned with olive oil, melted butter, garlic powder, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper before being baked until golden and crisp. This recipe yields crunchy, flavorful bread cubes ideal for adding texture to salads or soups, with control over seasoning and crunchiness compared to store-bought options.

Description

These Homemade Croutons start with sturdy breads such as French, Italian, or sourdough cut into 3/4-inch cubes. They are coated in a mixture of olive oil and melted butter for richness and then seasoned with garlic powder, Italian herbs, kosher salt, and freshly ground black pepper. Baking at 375 degrees Fahrenheit until the croutons turn golden brown and crisp develops their crunch and toasted flavor.

The bread cubes crisp up on the outside while retaining just enough chew inside if not overbaked, making them versatile for enhancing salads, soups, or snack bowls. Adjusting the amount of seasoning lets you customize flavor intensity.

Once cooled, they store well in an airtight container at room temperature for about a week, providing a ready-to-use crunchy component.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 French bread or Italian or Sourdough bread, loaf, crusty
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons butter melted
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper freshly ground

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
  2. Cut the loaf of bread into 3/4-inch cubes and place in a large bowl. Drizzle the bread cubes with olive oil and melted butter. Sprinkle the garlic powder, Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper over the bread. Toss until all of the bread cubes are well coated.
  3. Spread the bread cubes onto the prepared baking sheet, making sure the bread cubes are in an even layer and not touching.
  4. Bake for 12 to 20 minutes, tossing halfway through, or until the croutons are golden brown. Check early to make sure you don't burn them. Time will depend on the thickness of your bread and your oven. Remove from the oven and let cool completely. Store in an airtight container for up to 1 week.

Notes

  • Store croutons in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days to maintain freshness.
