Homemade Dog Chews

Homemade Dog Chews are made by thinly slicing sweet potatoes and baking them slowly at a low temperature to create chewy, dried treats. The texture is dense and slightly flexible, making them suitable for dogs to safely chew. This method uses minimal ingredients and time, yielding a natural snack free from additives. Storing these treats in the refrigerator or freezer prevents spoilage.

Description

This recipe creates DIY dog chews using only sweet potatoes as the ingredient. By slicing the potatoes into thin strips about a quarter to a third of an inch thick and baking them slowly at 250 degrees Fahrenheit for about three hours, the sweet potatoes dry out to a chewy texture suitable for canine chewing enjoyment.

The process requires flipping halfway through baking to achieve even drying. The baking sheet can be lined with parchment or used directly, depending on availability. The low-temperature slow baking prevents burning while preserving natural sweetness in the potatoes.

Once cooked, these treats should be stored chilled in the refrigerator or freezer to avoid mold. Such homemade chews offer a simple, preservative-free option compared to commercially processed dog snacks.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 sweet potato or yams

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 250 degrees f. Wash and dry your sweet potatoes. Thinly slice your potatoes length-wise. 1/4- 1/3 inch wide max.
  2. Place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment if you have it. I was all out this time so I just placed them directly on the cookie sheet. Then bake them for 3 hours, turning them over halfway through. You want them to be pretty chewy and dry. You can also use a dehydrator if you have one instead.
  3. Store them in the fridge or freezer because if you leave them out they could get moldy.
  4. Then the real fun begins......giving them to your dog.
