Homemade Eggnog Recipe

Report
This homemade eggnog blends egg yolks, sugar, cream, and milk with cinnamon and vanilla to create a rich, creamy holiday drink. The mixture is gently heated to thicken without scrambling the eggs, resulting in a smooth texture. Chilled before serving, it is often topped with whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon for extra flavor and presentation. This eggnog is a traditional festive beverage enjoyed cold from the fridge.

Description

Homemade Eggnog Recipe combines six egg yolks, sugar, heavy whipping cream, whole milk, cinnamon, and vanilla extract. The recipe begins by whisking egg yolks and sugar until creamy. Then a mixture of cream, milk, and cinnamon is heated to a simmer and slowly incorporated into the egg mixture to avoid curdling. The combined mixture is returned to low heat to thicken slightly before removing from heat and adding vanilla. This careful heating produces a rich, smooth drink.

The chilled eggnog can be served with whipped cream and a cinnamon sprinkle, adding a light contrasting topping to the creamy base. The cinnamon enhances the warm spice note characteristic of classic eggnog.

It is best stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator and consumed within a week to maintain freshness. Ensure thorough chilling for thicker consistency and optimal flavor development.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 6 egg large yolks
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 2 cups milk whole
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Whisk together the egg yolks and the sugar until light and creamy.
  2. Then in a saucepan over medium heat, combine the heavy cream, milk and cinnamon. Stir and heat until the mixture reaches a simmer.
  3. Next gradually add the hot milk to the egg mixture (1 spoonful at a time) whisking after the addition of each spoonful. You want to gradually add in the heated milk so that you do not scramble the eggs.  Follow this process until all the milk has been added to the egg mixture.
  4. Then pour the mixture back into the saucepan on the stove.
  5. Heat on medium low heat and whisk until the mixture is slightly thickened. It will thicken more as it cools.
  6. Remove from the heat and then stir in the vanilla extract.
  7. Store in the mixture in the refrigerator until chilled and thickened.
  8. Serve topped with fresh whipped cream and additional cinnamon if you prefer.
  9. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Keep eggnog refrigerated in an airtight container and consume within one week for best quality.
