Homemade Enchilada Sauce
Description
The Homemade Enchilada Sauce is prepared by blending canned tomato sauce and green chilies with chili powder, cumin, dried oregano, and minced garlic until smooth. The mixture is then warmed on the stove over medium-high heat to meld the flavors. Adding water gradually adjusts the thickness for suitability as a sauce. This sauce offers a straightforward method to make a classic enchilada topping with balanced herbal and chili notes. It can be made ahead and stored in the refrigerator or freezer to allow the flavors to mature and to provide convenience for future meals.
Ingredients
- 1 can tomato sauce 15 oz
- 1 can green chilies 4 oz, do not drain
- 1 Tbsp chili powder
- 1/2 tsp cumin
- 1/2 tsp oregano dried
- 1 tsp garlic minced
- 2/3 cup water
Instructions
- Place all the ingredients except for the water into a food processor or blender and blend until smooth. Then pour the mixture into a sauce pan and then heat over medium high heat.
- Once the sauce is warm, gradually add in the water and stir until the sauce is the consistency that you prefer and then enjoy!
Notes
- Prepare this sauce ahead of time and store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to five days.
- For longer storage, freeze the sauce for up to three months, thawing before use.
