Homemade French Onion Dip
Description
The recipe begins by melting butter and slowly cooking diced onions with salt, black pepper, onion powder, and a hint of cayenne pepper until golden and sweet. The onions then cool while cream cheese, mayonnaise, and sour cream are blended until smooth. The caramelized onions are folded in to provide texture and savory depth. Chilling the dip for at least two hours (preferably overnight) allows the flavors to meld, enhancing the rich onion character.
The result is a dip with a creamy mouthfeel and a balanced onion aroma, with a slight warmth from cayenne pepper. The dip keeps well refrigerated and is best served at room temperature, paired classically with crinkle cut potato chips.
The method avoids overwhipping to retain a dense creamy consistency. Adjusting the amount of mayonnaise can modulate richness. The option to add onion powder provides extra flavor punch as desired.
Ingredients
- 3 tbsp butter
- 2 1/2 cups onion 2 to 3 onions) (brown, yellow or white, diced
- 3/4 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
- 4 oz / 120 g cream cheese (cold), cut into cubes
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise whole egg
- 1/2 cup sour cream (full fat is best, but you can use low fat or even yoghurt)
Instructions
- Melt the butter in a fry pan over medium heat.
- Add the onions, salt, pepper, onion powder and cayenne pepper. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring. Then reduce the heat to medium low and cook for 20 to 25 minutes, stirring occasionally. The onions should be sweet and golden. Remove from stove and allow to cool.
- Place the cream cheese, sour cream and mayo in a bowl, mix until smooth (use microwave in 10 sec bursts if needed to assist)
- Add the caramelised onions. Mix until just combined. Refrigerate at least 2 hours to allow flavours to develope, overnight is better!
- Serve at room temperature, garnished with chopped chives if desired. Best served with crinkle cut plain potato chips!
Notes
- This recipe reduces butter and mayonnaise from the original to avoid excessive richness while maintaining creaminess.
- Blend cream cheese softened or gently warmed instead of whipping for a smooth, lump-free texture.
- Chill the dip for at least 2 hours to allow flavors to fully develop; overnight is preferable.
- Optionally garnish with chopped chives before serving for fresh color and mild onion flavor.
- Serve at room temperature with plain crinkle cut potato chips for optimal taste and texture.
