Homemade Fried Onion Rings Recipe

Report
These homemade fried onion rings begin with thickly sliced onion rings coated in flour, dipped in an egg and milk mixture, and then coated with crispy panko bread crumbs for frying. The coating creates a crunchy golden exterior while the onions become tender and sweet inside. This recipe requires frying in hot oil until the rings turn perfectly golden brown.

Description

The Homemade Fried Onion Rings Recipe uses sliced onion rings that are first dredged in flour to help the batter adhere. Next, they are dipped into a simple batter made of beaten eggs mixed with milk, which provides moisture and helps the breadcrumbs stick. The final coating is panko bread crumbs that fry up extra crispy and crunchy. The onions are fried in about 2 inches of hot vegetable oil heated to 375°F, cooked about 2-3 minutes on each side until deeply golden.

This method results in onion rings with a crisp outer texture while the onions inside become tender with a mild sweetness. The rings should be drained on paper towels after frying to remove excess oil and can be salted immediately to maintain crispness. These fried onion rings are ideal served warm as a snack or accompaniment alongside dipping sauces like ranch or ketchup.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 onion sliced into 1/2? thicken slices and divided into rings
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 2 egg large
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 cup panko bread crumbs
  • vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  1. You will need 3 small bowls. Place flour in one bowl, eggs and milk in a second bowl (beat them together) and then the Panko crumbs in a third bowl.
  2. Coat the sliced onions in the flour, then in the egg mixture and then in the bread crumb mixture. Place on a separate plate until ready to fry.
  3. Continue to do this until all of the onions have been coated.
  4. Add oil to a small saucepan. You’ll need about 2 inches of oil. Heat on medium heat until it has reached a temperature of 375 degrees F.
  5. Place the coated onions in the oil and fry on each side until the onions are golden brown. I cooked mine for approximately 2-3 minutes per side.
  6. Then transfer the fried onion rings to a plate lined with a paper towel. Allow them to cool (they will be hot). You can top them with salt to keep them crisp at this time.
  7. Then serve with your favorite dipping sauce. I served mine with ranch. Enjoy!
