Homemade Frozen Lemonade
Description
This recipe starts by zesting two lemons to extract about one tablespoon of lemon zest, then juicing enough lemons to obtain half a cup of fresh lemon juice. These are combined with honey as a natural sweetener, and a base of ice and water in a high-speed blender. Blending on medium speed for one to two minutes produces a smooth, frozen lemonade slush.
The amount of ice can be increased for thicker consistency or reduced for a smoother drink. Water addition adjusts the dilution to taste. The fresh lemon zest intensifies the citrus aroma and flavor, complementing the tartness of the juice balanced by the honey’s sweetness. Serving in a mason jar with a straw and a lemon slice completes the presentation for a casual, summery feel.
Honey can be substituted with agave nectar or simple syrup to vary sweetness, and low-carb options include using stevia. The frozen lemonade can be prepped ahead and stored in the freezer, then allowed to thaw partially before blending again to refresh the texture. Using the microwave briefly to thaw before re-blending can work if pressed for time. These options make it a practical choice for summer entertaining or a personal cool-down treat.
Ingredients
- ½ cup lemon juice about 5 large lemons
- 1 Tbsp. lemon zest
- ⅓ cup honey
- 3 ½ - 4 cups ice
- ½ cup water
Instructions
- Zest two of the lemons before juicing to get 1 tablespoon of lemon zest.
- Add lemon juice, zest, honey, 3½ cups of ice, and ½ cup of water to a high-speed blender. Blend ingredients on medium for 1-2 minutes, or until completely smooth. Add more ice if you would like it thicker or additional water if you would like it smoother.
- Serve frozen lemonade in a mason jar with a straw and a lemon slice.
Notes
- Substitute honey with agave nectar or simple syrup if preferred.
- For a low-carb version, use 1–2 teaspoons of liquid stevia instead of honey.
- Frozen lemonade can be made ahead and stored in a freezer-safe container.
- Before serving pre-made lemonade, allow it to thaw for 30 minutes to an hour or briefly microwave to soften before re-blending.
