Homemade Hamburger Helper Recipe
Description
The Homemade Hamburger Helper recipe starts by browning ground beef combined with tomato paste, Dijon mustard, and a blend of spices to build flavor. Dry macaroni noodles and beef broth are added to the pan and simmered covered until the pasta reaches al dente. After the noodles are tender, half-and-half and shredded sharp cheddar cheese are stirred in and melted into a creamy sauce that clings to the pasta and beef. This dish offers a creamy, cheesy texture balanced by the savory spiced meat. It's designed to be served warm and can be adapted by swapping meats or cheeses according to preference.
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon thyme dried
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon paprika
- ¼ - ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 12 ounces macaroni noodles dried
- 4 cups beef broth or 4 cups water + 4 beef bouillon cubes
- 1 cup half-and-half
- 2 cups cheddar cheese shredded sharp
Instructions
- Place a large sauté pan (with a lid) over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef. Break the meat into small pieces with a wooden spoon. As it's browning, mix in the tomato paste, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, thyme, salt, pepper, paprika, and cayenne pepper.
- Once the beef is fully cooked, add the macaroni noodles, and beef broth. Stir well. Then cover the pan and simmer for 7-10 minutes, until the pasta is cooked to al dente.
- Remove the lid and stir in the half & half and shredded cheese. Simmer and stir another 2-3 minutes, until the sauce is thick and smooth. Serve warm.
Notes
- Substitute pork sausage for ground beef or pepper jack cheese for cheddar to change the flavor profile.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4-5 days.
- This dish freezes well; freeze in airtight containers for up to 3-4 months and thaw overnight in the fridge before reheating.
