Homemade Hot Chocolate with Chocolate Chips
Description
This hot chocolate begins by mixing cocoa powder with water on the stove to form a smooth base. Heated with milk (whole milk used in this recipe), the mixture is warmed without boiling. Adding semi-sweet chocolate chips off the heat allows them to melt gently, enriching the drink with chocolate depth. Sugar is incorporated incrementally to achieve the desired sweetness, balanced by a small amount of fine sea salt.
Vanilla extract offers aromatic complexity, rounding the flavors. The resulting beverage is smooth and creamy with a balance of chocolate bitterness and sweetness.
Serving this hot chocolate with whipped cream, marshmallows, or flavored syrups like peppermint or caramel can customize it further. Variations include dairy-free options using plant-based milks and sugar-free versions using alternate sweeteners. It can also be adapted into alcoholic versions by adding Irish cream liqueur or layered in a hot chocolate bar setup with various toppings. Preparing whipped cream bombs or homemade marshmallows enhances presentation and texture.
Ingredients
- 1 ½ tablespoons cocoa powder I used Dutch Processed cocoa powder
- 4 ½ tablespoons water filtered is best
- 2 cups milk I used organic, whole milk, whole
- ⅓ cup semi-sweet chocolate heaping, chips or chopped chocolate, about 3 oz
- 1-3 tablespoons granulated sugar I use all natural cane sugar
- ⅛-¼ teaspoon salt a fine sea salt is better in this recipe, sea salt
- ½ - 1 teaspoon vanilla extract try other extracts too!
Instructions
- Start by whisking together your cocoa powder and water in a small saucepan.Turn heat to medium-high, pour in milk, whisking to combine. Whisk occasionally, but do not let the mixture boil, just heat until steaming.
- Reduce heat to low, adding chocolate chips. Let stand for 30 seconds until chocolate is melted, then whisk or stir to combine.
- Add sugar a tablespoon at a time until desired sweetness acheived. Add a little salt (less for sweeter hot chocolate). Continue stirring until warmed through. Stir in vanilla extract and serve.
Notes
- Substitute whole milk with plant-based milks like oat or almond for a dairy-free hot chocolate.
- Create a hot chocolate bar with assorted chocolate chips, syrups, marshmallows, and whipped cream for variety.
- For sugar-free versions, use unsweetened chocolate and natural sweeteners like monk fruit.
- Add extracts like peppermint or a shot of espresso for flavored variations such as mint or mocha hot chocolate.
- Homemade whipped cream or marshmallows can be prepared ahead and added for a richer experience.
- Freeze whipped cream in molds to make whipped cream bombs, which melt into the hot chocolate.
