Homemade Kansas City Style BBQ Sauce

This Homemade Kansas City Style BBQ Sauce combines tomato sauce and paste with sweeteners like honey and molasses, balanced with red wine vinegar and spices including cayenne, paprika, garlic, onion, cinnamon, and chili powder. The sauce simmers to blend savory, sweet, tangy, and smoky flavors with a medium thick consistency suitable for brushing onto grilled meats during the final cooking phase.

Description

The sauce is constructed from a base of tomato sauce and paste, adding body and depth, combined with honey and molasses for characteristic sweetness and richness typical of Kansas City BBQ style. Red wine vinegar contributes a mild acidic tang to balance the flavors. Liquid smoke introduces a hickory flavor reminiscent of smoked barbecue without needing a smoker.

Spices such as cayenne pepper, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, ground cinnamon, and chili powder create a nuanced seasoning profile with mild heat and warmth. The sauce simmers gently for 25 minutes to meld the ingredients, allowing thickening and flavor development.

This sauce is intended for use on chicken, pork, or beef, brushed on during the last 10 minutes of grilling to add a flavorful glaze. It can be cooled and stored in the refrigerator for up to one week, making it convenient for multiple cookouts or meals.
