Homemade Lemonade

Homemade Lemonade is made with freshly squeezed lemon juice, granulated sugar mashed with lemon slices for extra flavor, and water. The process includes mixing mashed lemon slices with sugar, then adding lemon juice and water before straining. The final drink is chilled and can be garnished with lemon slices, offering a balanced sweetness suited to personal taste preferences.

Description

Homemade Lemonade combines fresh lemon juice with a simple syrup made by mashing sugar and lemon slices together. This technique infuses the syrup with lemon oils from the rind as well as juice from the fruit slices. After mixing in additional lemon juice and water, the liquid is strained to remove solids, resulting in a smooth lemonade. The drink is then chilled before serving.

The flavor balances tartness from the lemons with sweetness from the sugar, which can be adjusted to suit taste. The lemonade is refreshing and has a clean, citrus character enhanced by the fresh lemon slices used in preparation. Serving it chilled with optional lemon slice garnishes adds a visual and aromatic touch.

This lemonade works as a straightforward, natural refreshment for warm days or any time you want fresh-tasting citrus without added artificial ingredients. Adjusting the sugar or substituting part of it with honey or other sweeteners is possible to customize the flavor.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 10 lemon for 2 cups freshly squeezed lemon juice; use more lemons if needed to get to that amount, plural
  • 8 cups water
  • lemon if desired, extra, slices, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Slice two of the lemons into thin slices (try to remove all the seeds and discard).
  2. In a large bowl, using a potato masher, mash the sugar and the lemon slices until the sugar is completely wet, about 1 minute.
  3. Juice the remaining 8 lemons (for 2 cups lemon juice; use more lemons, if needed, to get to that amount).
  4. Add the water and lemon juice to the bowl with the lemon slices and sugar, and stir everything together until the sugar is completely dissolved, 1-2 minutes.
  5. Strain the mixture through a fine mesh strainer set over a pitcher or large bowl, pressing on the lemon slices a bit to get as much juice as possible; discard solids.
  6. Chill the lemonade until ready to serve (or serve immediately). Garnish with extra lemon slices, if desired.

Notes

  • Adjust the sugar amount to suit your sweetness preference or try part honey or other sweeteners.
