Homemade Lemonade Recipe
Description
This homemade lemonade recipe combines equal parts sugar and water heated to create a simple syrup, which dissolves the sugar completely without granules. Freshly squeezed lemon juice is mixed into the syrup, and cold water is added to dilute the mixture to desired strength.
The drink is stirred well and served over ice for a crisp, bright flavor. Using fresh-squeezed lemon juice preserves natural lemon flavors and aroma, but bottled lemon juice may also be used with some difference in character.
This lemonade is suitable for casual gatherings or as a daily refreshment. It can be refrigerated for several hours for a cool serve or made in advance.
Ingredients
- 6 cups water divided
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup lemon juice seeds removed, pulp may remain, fresh-squeezed
Instructions
- Combine 1 cup (236ml) water and 1 cup sugar in a small saucepan. Place over medium-low heat and stir until sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat and set aside, allow to cool for 10 minutes.
- Pour 1 cup fresh-squeezed lemon juice into a pitcher. Add sugar/water mixture (simple syrup).
- Add remaining 5 cups (1180ml) water and stir well. Pour over ice and serve, or transfer to refrigerator and allow to chill several hours before serving.
Notes
- Freshly squeezed lemon juice is recommended for best flavor but bottled lemon juice can be used successfully.
- Make simple syrup by dissolving sugar in water over low heat to avoid graininess.
- Chill the lemonade before serving for a more refreshing experience.
