Homemade Marinara Sauce Recipe

This homemade marinara sauce starts with sautéed onions and garlic for a flavorful base. Crushed tomatoes are combined with fresh basil, sugar, oregano, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes, then simmered to develop a balanced, savory tomato sauce with mild herbal and spicy notes. It is versatile for pasta, pizza, or other dishes.

Description

The recipe builds flavor by first gently cooking chopped onions until translucent and soft, releasing their natural sweetness. Adding minced garlic briefly cooks it to bring out its aroma without bitterness. Crushed tomatoes provide the sauce's body, while fresh basil adds a bright herb note. Sugar balances the acidity of the tomatoes, and dried oregano, sea salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes add herbal and subtle heat complexities. Simmering the sauce for 15-20 minutes allows the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken slightly.

This marinara is a straightforward tomato sauce suitable for a variety of Italian dishes, including pasta, dipping, or as a pizza base. Adjust seasoning as needed for preference and pair with fresh pasta or bread.
