Homemade Old Bay Seasoning Recipe

Homemade Old Bay Seasoning blends a variety of ground spices including celery seed, paprika, mustard, ginger, bay leaf, and several warm spices to replicate the classic seasoning mix. Grinding the ingredients together creates a finely powdered blend that can be stored and used to season seafood, meats, and vegetables. This DIY version allows control over spice freshness and intensity.

Description

The Homemade Old Bay Seasoning Recipe combines salt, celery seed, sweet and smoked paprika, ground mustard, ginger, bay leaf, black and white pepper, red pepper flakes, nutmeg, mace, cardamom, allspice, cinnamon, and cloves. Grinding these whole and ground spices together yields a versatile seasoning powder similar to the traditional Old Bay blend.

The mixture balances savory, smoky, and warm spice notes for depth, making it suitable for enhancing shellfish, fried foods, roasted vegetables, or grilled meats. The finely ground texture ensures even seasoning when sprinkled or used in rubs.

This seasoning can store in an airtight jar placed in a cool, dark location to preserve freshness for up to three months. Making it at home allows for fresh spice flavor and customizing proportions if desired. Approximately 1/4 cup is yielded by this recipe.
