Homemade Peanut Butter

Homemade Peanut Butter is made by processing dry roasted peanuts until creamy, then optionally sweetening with honey and seasoning with salt. This method yields about 1.5 cups of rich, spreadable peanut butter with a fresh nutty flavor free from additives. It can be stored in the pantry or refrigerated, depending on preference and usage speed.

Description

This recipe starts with dry roasted shelled peanuts processed in a food processor, which first crumble then gradually release oils to form a smooth butter. Adding salt enhances flavor, and honey is an optional sweetener that balances the nuttiness. The texture smoothness depends on the processing time, with occasional scraping down of the bowl to ensure consistency.

The peanut butter can be stored in a glass jar either in the pantry for about a month or in the refrigerator for up to six months, though refrigeration thickens the butter. The fresh-made quality allows control over sweetness and saltiness without preservatives.

Nutritional information may vary if honey is included.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 cups peanuts dry roasted, shelled
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon honey optional

Instructions

  1. Place roasted peanuts in a food processor. Turn the food processor on and let it run on high for about 5 minutes, scraping down the sides with a spatula as necessary. The peanuts will start to crumble, then form into a dry ball and eventually start to look like spreadable peanut butter.
  2. Once the consistency is creamy and there are no more crumbs, you can add the salt and honey, if using. Turn the food processor on again and blend for 20-30 seconds to incorporate. Yields about 1 1/2 cups peanut butter.
  3. Transfer to a glass jar, and store in the fridge or in the pantry.

Notes

  • Store homemade peanut butter in the pantry for up to one month or refrigerate for up to six months.
  • Refrigeration thickens the peanut butter; store in the pantry if you prefer a softer texture and use it quickly.
