Homemade Pear Cider
Description
This pear cider starts by combining peeled and halved pears with brown sugar and whole warming spices such as cinnamon sticks, cloves, allspice, and vanilla pods in a large pot with enough water to cover. The mixture is brought to a boil then simmered uncovered for an hour, allowing the pears to soften and partially break down. Mashing the pears slightly starts to release their juices.
After covering and simmering for an additional two hours, the flavorful liquid is strained through a fine mesh sieve—twice for clarity—to remove solids. The resulting cider is served hot, often with a cinnamon stick garnish, bringing fruit sweetness balanced with aromatic spice.
Store any leftovers sealed in the refrigerator. The cider offers a comforting, homemade warm drink option, especially suitable for cooler months.
Ingredients
- 10 pear cut in half, stems and seeds removed, whole, Royal Riviera variety
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 3 cinnamon stick
- 2 teaspoon ground allspice
- 1 teaspoon clove whole
- 1 vanilla bean split open, pod
Instructions
- Combine the pears, sugar, cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, vanilla pod and allspice in a large stock pot and cover with water. You want the water to be about 2 inches higher than the pears. Bring the mixture to a boil, reduce it to a simmer and cook for 1 hour uncovered. After 1 hour, you can mash some of the pears (they will just fall apart). Cover the pot and simmer for another 2 hours.
- After 2 hours, let the mixture cool slightly. Strain it through a fine mesh sieve (I did so twice) to remove the solids. Some of the solids may remain. You can strain it through cheesecloth one more time before serving if desired. Serve hot with cinnamon sticks!
- Store in a sealed container or jar in the fridge.
Notes
- Use Royal Riviera pears for best flavor and sweetness.
- Simmer uncovered initially to concentrate flavors, then covered to maintain warmth and meld spices.
- Strain the cider through a fine mesh sieve multiple times to achieve a smooth drink; optionally use cheesecloth for extra clarity.
- Serve hot with a cinnamon stick garnish.
- Store in a sealed container in the refrigerator and reheat before serving.
