Homemade Pepperoni Pizza
Description
Homemade Pepperoni Pizza starts with a yeast-leavened dough combining warm water, sugar, instant dry yeast, flour (preferably 00), salt, and olive oil. After mixing and kneading, the dough is left to rise until doubled, resulting in a light and airy texture. Dividing the dough enables making two large or three smaller pizzas. The dough is rolled out and layered with a tomato-based pizza sauce, fresh mozzarella cheese, and pepperoni slices. High oven heat or an outdoor pizza oven ensures a crisp crust with bubbly melted cheese.
The flavor centers on the savory combination of fresh mozzarella and pepperoni, while the crust provides a tender and chewy backdrop. The inclusion of optional toppings like red chili flakes or hot honey can add a mild heat or sweetness to balance flavors. Rolling out and topping the pizza to personal taste allows flexibility in thickness and topping amounts.
This pizza can be served as a main dish suitable for casual dinners or gatherings, complemented by simple sides or salads. The recipe's step-by-step process produces a classic pepperoni pizza experience at home, replicating qualities of traditional pizzerias. Using freshly grated mozzarella improves melt and texture over pre-shredded cheese.
To keep cheese melty and bubbly, freshly grating mozzarella from a block is recommended. Pepperoni brands with quality and flavor, such as Boar's Head, enhance the final taste. For a modern twist, adding hot honey either store-bought or homemade by infusing honey with chili flakes adds complexity. Using a high-temperature pizza oven cuts cooking time drastically and yields a crisp crust with an evenly melted topping.
Ingredients
Homemade Pizza Dough:
- 1 1/2 cups water 110 degrees, warm
- 1 envelope (2 1/4 tsp) instant dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 3 3/4 cups flour (suggest 00 flour)
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 2 Tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
Pizza Toppings:
- 1 jar pizza sauce
- 16 ounces mozzarella cheese fresh
- pepperoni slices
Optional Ingredients:
- red chili flakes
- hot honey
- jalapeños
- basil or oregano
Instructions
- In a large bowl or mixer, add warm water (110 degrees), yeast, and sugar. Let sit for 2 minutes to make sure the yeast is working.
- Add flour and salt and begin to mix. Stir in olive oil. If the dough is too sticky, add in 1 Tablespoon of flour, until the dough comes together in a ball.
- Place on a lightly floured surface and knead into a smooth ball.
- Grease a large bowl with oil or spray non-stick cooking spray to keep the dough from sticking to the sides. Place the dough into the bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and let it double in size. This should take 1-2 hours.
- Once the dough has risen, divide into 2 or 3 equal parts. This dough recipe make two 14-inch pizzas or three 9-inch pizzas. Heat the oven or outdoor pizza oven. I suggest heating the indoor oven to the highest temperature, about 450 degrees. If you are using an outdoor pizza oven, follow their directions.
- Roll out on floured surface into a circle. Cover with sauce, mozzarella cheese, and your favorite toppings.
- Bake until cheese is bubbly and melted and the crust is a golden brown color. Remove from the oven and top with your favorite ingredients such as red chili flakes, hot honey, fresh basil and oregano, or balsamic glaze.
Notes
- Freshly grate mozzarella cheese for optimum melt and texture instead of using pre-shredded.
- Boar's Head brand pepperoni is recommended for authentic flavor and quality.
- Hot honey can be purchased or made by infusing honey with chili flakes to add a subtle spicy-sweet dimension.
- Using a high-temperature pizza oven, such as the Solo Stove Pi Pizza Oven, allows cooking the pizza in about 90 seconds with a crispy crust and bubbly cheese.
- Dividing dough yields either two 14-inch or three 9-inch pizzas to suit your serving needs.
