Homemade Pizza Sauce
Description
Homemade Pizza Sauce blends canned crushed tomatoes and tomato paste with sautéed garlic and olive oil to create a rich base. The addition of sugar balances the acidity of the tomatoes while salt and black pepper season the sauce. Italian seasoning and optional red pepper flakes add herbaceous and mild heat notes, resulting in a sauce that complements many pizza styles.
The sauce is gently simmered for 20-30 minutes, allowing the flavors to deepen and the sauce to thicken for easy spreading on pizza crust. The initial cooking of garlic in olive oil softens its pungency without letting it brown and become bitter.
This sauce can be used immediately after cooling or stored for later use. Adjust the garlic and seasoning amounts to match your taste preferences, and use it with your preferred pizza dough and toppings.
Add extra garlic for a more pronounced garlic flavor.Sugar helps balance tomato acidity; you may substitute with a pinch of baking soda if preferred.Adjust salt to taste depending on your preference and the saltiness of other ingredients.Italian seasoning may be replaced with a blend of dried basil, oregano, thyme, marjoram, and rosemary if needed.
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- 15 ounce crushed tomatoes canned
- 3 ounces tomato paste
- 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- Pinch red pepper flakes optional
Instructions
- Heat a saucepan over medium-low heat.
- When hot, add olive oil and reduce heat to low.
- Stir in garlic and cook, stirring constantly, for 1-2 minutes, or just until the garlic is soft and fragrant. You don't want the garlic to brown, or it can get bitter.
- Add the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, sugar, salt, pepper, Italian seasoning, and a pinch of red pepper flakes, if using. Stir to combine.
- Cover the saucepan.
- Let simmer for 20-30 minutes over low, stirring occasionally.
- Let the sauce cool for at least 10 minutes before using.
Notes
- Increase garlic for a stronger flavor if desired.
- Sugar balances tomato acidity but can be substituted with a small amount of baking soda or omitted.
- Salt quantity can be adjusted according to taste and other ingredients.
- If Italian seasoning is unavailable, mix dried basil, oregano, thyme, marjoram, and rosemary as a substitute.
