Homemade Pumpkin Liqueur

Homemade Pumpkin Liqueur combines pumpkin puree with half and half, confectioners sugar, warming autumn spices, vanilla extract, and dark rum to create a creamy, spiced drink. Gently heated before adding rum, then strained, this liqueur offers a smooth texture with rich pumpkin flavor and warm spice notes, ideal for seasonal sipping or cocktails.

Description

This Homemade Pumpkin Liqueur blends pumpkin puree with half and half (or heavy cream), confectioners sugar, and a mix of ground ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and allspice. The ingredients are gently heated together without simmering to meld flavors, then cooled slightly before adding vanilla extract and dark rum. The mixture is strained to remove solids, leaving a smooth, creamy liqueur.

The spice blend complements the pumpkin's natural sweetness, while the rum adds depth and warmth. The drink has a rich but balanced texture suitable for serving chilled or adding to coffee and cocktails during autumn festivities.

Stored in the refrigerator, the liqueur keeps for about a month, allowing time to enjoy it through the season. The process avoids cooking the alcohol to preserve flavor.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 cup half and half or heavy cream
  • 1 cup pumpkin not pumpkin pie filling, puree
  • 1/3 cup confectioners sugar
  • 1/2 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg freshly grated
  • 1/4 tsp cloves ground
  • 1/4 tsp ground allspice
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 8 ounces dark rum

Instructions

  1. Put the half and half, pumpkin, sugar, and spices in a saucepan, stirring to combine everything. Heat gently for a few minutes, but do not bring to a simmer.
  2. Let cool slightly and then add the vanilla and the rum.
  3. Strain the mixture through a mesh strainer, stirring to encourage the liquid to flow through. Some of the puree will go through, but most will be left in the strainer. Discard the remaining solids.
  4. Pour the liqueur into a clean bottle or bottles.
  5. Keeps for a month in the refrigerator.
