Homemade Ranch Dressing
Description
This ranch dressing recipe relies on mayonnaise and buttermilk as its base, giving it a rich and smooth texture with a subtle tang from the buttermilk. The seasoning blend provides classic ranch flavors: garlic and onion powders impart savory notes, while dried parsley and dill add herbal character, complemented by black pepper for mild heat.
The ingredients are whisked together and chilled for at least two hours to allow the flavors to meld and the seasoning to hydrate, creating a cohesive dressing suitable for leafy salads or vegetable platters. Additionally, a dry ranch seasoning mix can be prepared and stored, making it easy to mix fresh ranch dressing by combining the mix with mayonnaise and buttermilk as needed.
Alternative seasoning blends like Emeril's Essence or a no-salt seasoning mix can be used to adjust flavor preferences or dietary needs. A lighter version substituting Greek yogurt and skim milk is noted but will have a different taste and texture.
Ingredients
- 2 cups mayonnaise (Best Foods or Hellmann's)
- 2 cups buttermilk
- 2 tablespoons Accent seasoning or to taste (Spike has no added MSG, or Spike seasoning
- 1 tablespoon garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon onion powder
- 1 tablespoon parsley dried
- 1 1/2 teaspoons dill dried
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper or to taste
Instructions
- Mix all ingredients together well using a whisk.
- Chill for at least 2 hours.
Dry Ranch Dressing Mix
- Combine dry ingredients and store in an air-tight container.
- 3 tablespoons of this mix is equal to what comes in your typical-sized ranch dressing packet (3 Tablespoons of Mix with 1 cup of mayonnaise and 1 cup of buttermilk)
- Serve over salads or as a dip with veggies.
Notes
- Use the dry ranch seasoning mix to prepare fresh dressings as needed, storing the mix in an airtight container.
- Emeril’s Essence or no-salt seasoning blends can be substituted for different flavor profiles.
- A lighter version can be made with Greek yogurt and skim milk, though flavor and texture will differ.
