Homemade Ranch Dressing

Homemade Ranch Dressing combines minced garlic, sour cream, mayonnaise, buttermilk, and fresh herbs like parsley, dill, and chives for a classic creamy dressing. The garlic is turned into a paste with salt to mellow its sharpness, and white wine vinegar adds a gentle tang. Chilling the dressing allows flavors to meld, creating a well-rounded sauce ideal for salads, dips, or drizzling over vegetables.

Description

This Homemade Ranch Dressing recipe starts by preparing a garlic paste with minced garlic and salt to integrate smoothly into the dressing. Sour cream and mayonnaise form the creamy base, while buttermilk lightens the texture and adds acidity. Fresh Italian parsley, dill, and chives provide herbal brightness. White wine vinegar contributes mild acidity, balanced by black pepper seasoning.

Whisking all ingredients together creates a uniform mixture that sets into a flavorful dressing after chilling. The herbaceous and creamy dressing works well as a salad dressing, a dip for vegetables or chips, or a sauce to complement grilled foods.

Allowing the dressing to sit refrigerated for at least an hour enhances flavor development, though it can be used immediately if needed. Using fresh herbs ensures the best aromatic quality.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 clove garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • ¼ cup buttermilk
  • ¼ cup Italian parsley chopped
  • ¼ cup dill chopped, fresh
  • 2 tablespoon chives chopped
  • 1 teaspoon white wine vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Sprinkle the salt over the minced garlic while it's still on the cutting board. Using the side of the knife blade press the salt into the minced garlic and scrape. Continue to do this until the garlic and salt become a paste.
  2. Add the garlic paste to a medium-sized mixing bowl.
  3. Add in remaining ingredients to the bowl and whisk until smooth.
  4. Chill the dressing in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 1 to 2 hours to let the flavors develop. (You can use this dressing right away, but it'll taste so much better if you wait!)
