Homemade Salsa Recipe

This Homemade Salsa blends canned plum tomatoes with chopped onion, jalapeño, garlic, cumin, and fresh cilantro, balanced with lime juice and seasoning. It yields about 4 cups of salsa with a smooth to chunky texture depending on your processing. The flavor balances the mild heat of jalapeño and the brightness of lime, making it a versatile dip that also complements Mexican dishes.

Description

Homemade Salsa Recipe uses canned whole plum tomatoes combined with white onion, jalapeño pepper, garlic, cumin, salt, sugar, cilantro, and lime juice. These ingredients are combined and processed to your preferred texture, from smooth to chunky. The lime juice adds fresh acidity, while cumin contributes warmth and depth. The jalapeño provides a mild heat level that can be adjusted by removing seeds. After blending, refrigerating for a few hours allows flavors to meld.

The salsa works well as a chip dip and can also accompany tacos, grilled meats, or eggs. Its balance of fresh herbs and spices suits a range of dishes needing fresh, tangy, and mildly spicy flavor.

Adjust salt and sugar to taste after blending. Jalapeño seeds are removed here to moderate heat while keeping flavor. You can add texture with corn, black beans, or extra chopped tomatoes if desired.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 28 ounce whole plum tomatoes including juice, canned
  • 1 small white onion peeled and roughly chopped
  • 1 or 2 jalapeno pepper seeded and chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic chopped
  • 1 1/2 tsp cumin or to taste, ground
  • 1 tsp kosher salt or to taste
  • 1/4 to 1 tsp granulated sugar optional, and to taste
  • 1 or 2 handfuls cilantro this is probably 1 or 2 cups worth
  • 3 Tbsp lime juice fresh is best

Instructions

  1. Add all ingredients to a food processor. Pulse a few times to break up larger pieces, then process until texture is mostly smooth (or as smooth or chunky as you'd like).
  2. Taste the salsa and based on personal preference, adjust salt/sugar levels as necessary.
  3. Transfer to airtight container and refrigerate for a couple of hours for best flavor.
  4. Serve with tortilla chips and enjoy!

Notes

  • This recipe makes about 4 cups of salsa, serving approximately 12 with about 1/3 cup per serving.
  • Removing jalapeño seeds reduces heat without losing flavor; keep seeds for spicier salsa.
  • For added texture and flavor, stir in corn kernels, black beans, or extra chopped tomatoes.
