Homemade Simple Syrup
Description
Homemade Simple Syrup consists of one cup water and one cup granulated sugar gently heated until the sugar dissolves fully without boiling. This process yields a transparent syrup that smoothly mixes into beverages. The syrup can be infused with ingredients like mint, cinnamon sticks, or ginger after heating, adding distinct flavor notes while maintaining sweetness. The liquid consistency makes it preferable to dry sugar for cold drinks as it dissolves instantly.
The syrup is stored refrigerated in a sealed jar and lasts about a month. This recipe is scalable by simple multiplication or division to produce larger or smaller batches. Usage ranges from sweetening cocktails to lemonades or even substituting sugar in various cold drinks, offering flexibility in home bar or kitchen applications.
Infusions, such as mint steeped for 30-45 minutes or cinnamon for a couple of hours, transform the syrup notably, complementing autumnal or herbal flavor profiles. Such flavored syrups expand the simple syrup's uses, giving a subtle seasonality or spiced warmth without added complexity during preparation.
Ingredients
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup granulated sugar
Instructions
- Mix water and sugar together in a small saucepan.
- Heat over high heat until the sugar has completely dissolved in the water. You don’t want it to reach a boil, and it shouldn't because the sugar will dissolve as the water heats.
- When the sugar has completely dissolved, remove the simple syrup from the heat. Let it cool completely. (If you're going to infuse it with another flavor, now is where you'll add that ingredient!)
- Transfer to a mason jar, and transfer to the refrigerator, where it can stay for up to a month.
Notes
- Store simple syrup in the refrigerator for up to one month in a sealed container.
- Adjust the batch size easily by doubling or halving the water and sugar quantities.
- Infuse flavors by steeping fresh herbs like mint for 30-45 minutes after syrup has cooled.
- Add cinnamon sticks for 1-3 hours to create a warming cinnamon syrup, ideal for fall drinks.
- Try fresh ginger steeped for 30-45 minutes to make a spicy ginger syrup variation.
- Flavored syrups can be used to enhance cocktails or lemonades without needing additional sweeteners.
