Homemade Sloppy Joes

Homemade Sloppy Joes bring together ground beef cooked with sweet onion, bell pepper, and garlic in a tangy, slightly sweet tomato-based sauce. The sauce includes ketchup, mustard, vinegar, and seasonings, resulting in a rich, saucy filling that’s spooned onto sandwich rolls for a hearty meal with familiar comfort food appeal.

Description

This Sloppy Joes recipe starts by browning ground beef with minced onion, bell pepper, and garlic, creating a flavorful base. The sauce is made by mixing ketchup, mustard, white distilled vinegar, brown sugar, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, chili powder, salt, and black pepper, adding a balance of tanginess, sweetness, and spice. Once combined, the sauce simmers with the meat mixture to thicken slightly before serving.

The sandwich rolls hold the saucy filling well, making it suitable for casual meals and easy serving. The incorporation of bell pepper and onion adds texture and subtle sweetness, complementing the meaty sauce.

Substitutions for bell pepper or leaving it out can accommodate picky eaters without impacting the core flavors.
