Homemade Spreadable Butter

This Homemade Spreadable Butter blends unsalted butter with avocado oil and sea salt, creating a soft, smooth spread that firms up in the fridge yet stays spreadable straight from cold. The process involves gently bringing butter to room temperature before blending, avoiding microwaving to maintain texture. It offers a buttery flavor balanced by a hint of salt and the oil's mildness, enhancing its usability on bread, toast, or for cooking where a readily spreadable butter is preferred.

Description

Homemade Spreadable Butter combines organic unsalted butter with avocado oil and sea salt to achieve a soft yet firm texture that is easy to spread from the refrigerator. The butter is first brought to room temperature slowly, then processed with oil and salt until smooth, resulting in a slightly liquid mixture that solidifies after chilling. This recipe avoids heating butter in the microwave to preserve the texture and ensures that the spread maintains pleasant consistency and flavor.

The flavor is rich and buttery with a subtle salt enhancement and the mild, slightly fruity notes from avocado oil, which can be substituted with a neutral or buttery olive oil based on preference. The end product is versatile for spreading on breads or melting into dishes, providing convenience compared to hard, cold butter.

The spread should be refrigerated and consumed within three months. Avoid leaving it at room temperature for extended periods to prevent separation; if separation occurs, stirring can reincorporate the oil. This method yields a homemade alternative to commercial spreadable butter blends, tailored with simple ingredients and controlled texture.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 cup butter I prefer organic, unsalted
  • 3/4 cup avocado oil (you may substitute a neutral-flavored or buttery-flavored olive oil)
  • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt or to taste

Instructions

  1. Let the butter slowly come to room temperature. To speed this process, cut the butter into small chunks and separate them from each other. Do not try to speed things up in the microwave, even at half power... you’ll change the texture of the butter.
  2. Place the room temperature butter into a food processor along with the oil and sea salt.
  3. Process the butter, oil and salt for 1-2 minutes, scraping the sides of the processor periodically, till all lumps have disappeared and the mixture is smooth and soft. It will be quite liquid, but don't worry, it will firm up in the fridge.
  4. Pour the softened butter into a container that can be sealed airtight (like a Tupperware). Refrigerate for 1-2 hours until fully chilled and firm.
  5. This Homemade Spreadable Butter will last up to 3 months in the refrigerator. It is spreadable straight from the refrigerator. Do not leave the butter at room temperature too long or it will start to separate. If this happens, you can stir the oil back into the butter before refrigerating again.

Notes

  • Use a food processor for thorough blending of butter and oil into a smooth, spreadable consistency.
  • Avoid microwaving butter to speed softening, as it can alter the texture negatively.
  • Refrigerate the butter mixture for 1-2 hours until firm but still spreadable.
  • For longer storage, keep refrigerated and use within 3 months to maintain quality.
  • If oil separates when left at room temperature, stir the mixture to re-emulsify before use.
