Homemade Stem Ginger Recipe

This homemade stem ginger preserves fresh ginger pieces in a sweet syrup made from simmered ginger water and sugar. The process involves peeling and cutting ginger, boiling it to reduce bitterness, then simmering in sugar syrup until tender and flavorful. The result is a candied ginger that can be stored and used in desserts or recipes requiring stem ginger.

Description

The Homemade Stem Ginger Recipe begins with peeling and slicing fresh ginger roots into bite-sized pieces, optionally freezing ginger beforehand to ease peeling. The ginger is simmered in water to neutralize sharpness and soften the root. The cooking liquid is saved to make a sugar syrup by combining with sugar and heating until dissolved.

The ginger is returned to the syrup and simmered uncovered further until tender and infused with sweetness. Once cooked, the ginger is placed into sterilized jars, immersed in the syrup to keep it moist, and sealed to cool at room temperature, preserving it for future use.

This homemade preparation offers a way to have preserved ginger on hand, often used in baking, cooking, or as a sweet spicy condiment.
