Homemade Sweet and Sour Sauce

This Homemade Sweet and Sour Sauce balances pineapple and orange juices with soy sauce, sugars, vinegars, ketchup, and a touch of garlic powder for a tangy and sweet condiment. Thickened with a cornstarch slurry, it achieves a glossy, smooth consistency ideal for coating dishes. The optional red food coloring deepens its classic vibrant hue. This versatile sauce is suitable for glazing meats, dipping, or as a flavorful addition to stir-fries, providing a controlled balance of sweetness and acidity.

Description

Homemade Sweet and Sour Sauce combines fruit juices, sugars, and vinegars with soy sauce and ketchup to produce a tangy, sweet, and slightly savory flavor. The sauce is thickened by cornstarch dissolved in water, cooked over medium heat while stirring until glossy and coats the back of a spoon. Garlic powder adds a hint of warmth without overpowering. The optional addition of red gel food coloring gives the sauce a traditional bright red appearance, but this does not affect flavor.

The preparation requires gentle simmering and constant stirring to prevent lumps and ensure a smooth texture. Once thickened, the sauce is cooled before use, allowing flavors to meld and the sauce to fully set. Its balanced sweetness and acidity complement many dishes, from fried proteins to vegetables, and can be adapted by adjusting sugar or vinegar levels to taste.
