Homemade Sweet Chili Sauce

Report
Homemade Sweet Chili Sauce combines rice vinegar, sugar, garlic, soy sauce, and red chili flakes in a glossy, sticky sauce. Toasting the pepper flakes in advance adds a deeper, toasted chili flavor. The sauce is thickened with a cornstarch slurry, creating a balanced blend of tangy, sweet, spicy, and savory notes in a sauce that clings well to foods.

Description

The Homemade Sweet Chili Sauce uses a base of rice vinegar and water sweetened with white sugar. Fresh garlic and soy sauce add pungency and umami, while toasted red chili flakes provide heat and complexity. The mixture is cooked briefly to meld flavors, then thickened with a cornstarch slurry to achieve a syrupy consistency. Toasting the chili flakes enhances their flavor and aroma. This sauce is versatile for dipping or glazing foods, adding a bright sweet-spicy dimension.

The sauce’s thickness increases as it cools, so it’s important to remove it from heat once thickened to prevent over-thickening. The balance of acidity and sweetness is key to its classic taste, and the garlic infuses it with an aromatic punch. The use of soy sauce offers salty depth, but coconut aminos can be substituted for a gluten-free version. Once cooled, the sauce stores well and can be kept refrigerated for future use in meals requiring a sweet chili tang.
