Homemade Taco Seasoning
Description
The seasoning mix combines spices that provide warmth, smokiness, and a hint of heat typical in taco preparations. The measured blend balances earthy cumin and oregano with the brightness of garlic and onion powders. Red pepper flakes introduce slight spiciness, while salt and pepper enhance overall flavor. Mixing these ingredients creates about 2 3/4 tablespoons of seasoning, stored airtight to retain potency.
Use approximately 2 tablespoons per pound of meat, cooking with water to form a sauce that coats the filling. This homemade mix offers a customizable alternative to store-bought packets, enabling control over salt and spice levels.
Adding a thickening agent like cornstarch or flour can replicate the sauciness of commercial blends. Incorporate cornstarch into the dry mix or flour when simmering with water to adjust texture.
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon chili powder
- 1/4 /4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 /4 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/4 /4 teaspoon red pepper flakes crushed
- 1/4 /4 teaspoon oregano dried
- 1/2 /2 teaspoon paprika
- 1 1/2 /2 teaspoons cumin ground
- 1 teaspoon salt or kosher salt, sea salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
- In a small bowl, mix together chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder, red pepper flakes, oregano, paprika, cumin, salt and pepper. Store in an airtight container. Yields about 2 3/4 tablespoons.
- To use: Use about 2 tablespoons of the taco seasoning for every 1 pound of meat. Use more or less depending on your preference. Brown meat and drain the fat. Add your taco seasoning along with about 1/2 cup of water. Simmer and stir until water is absorbed.
Notes
- To achieve a thicker sauce like store-bought seasoning, add 1/2 teaspoon cornstarch to the dry mix.
- Alternatively, add 2 tablespoons flour with the water during cooking for sauce thickening.
