Homemade Taco Seasoning

This homemade taco seasoning blends chili powder, ground cumin, paprika, coriander, cayenne pepper, and salt, with optional cornstarch to thicken sauces. It allows control over spice level and ingredients compared to store-bought mixes. The seasoning blend is versatile for seasoning meats or vegetables in Mexican-style dishes, with a shelf life of up to six months when stored properly.

Description

Homemade Taco Seasoning combines chili powder, cumin, paprika, ground coriander, cayenne pepper, and salt to create a balanced seasoning mix with a warm and slightly spicy flavor profile. The optional cornstarch serves as a thickener, useful when adding moisture to tacos or sauces.

The mix can be tailored by omitting or increasing cayenne pepper to adjust heat intensity, making it adaptable to various preferences and age groups. It’s a convenient way to infuse Mexican-inspired dishes with seasoned flavor without preservatives.

Store the blend in an airtight container in a cool, dark place to maintain freshness for up to six months. The recipe yields about half a cup of seasoning, sufficient for several pounds of meat, depending on how much is used per recipe.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1/4 cup chili powder
  • 2 tablespoons cumin ground
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 2 teaspoons ground coriander
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper (see note 1)
  • salt
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch optional (see note 2)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl with a whisk, or in a jar with a tight-fitting lid, combine chili powder, cumin, paprika, coriander, cayenne pepper, and salt to taste (I like 2 teaspoons). Whisk in cornstarch if desired. Store in a cool dark place for up to 6 months.

Notes

  • Store the seasoning mix in an airtight container, away from light and heat, for up to six months to preserve flavor.
  • Adjust cayenne pepper quantity to suit preferred spice level; omit it for milder taste or increase for more heat.
  • Cornstarch is optional and can be added if a gluten-free thickening agent is desired in prepared dishes.
  • The recipe yields approximately half a cup of taco seasoning, enough for about four pounds of meat when using 2 tablespoons per pound.
