Homemade Taco Seasoning
Description
Homemade Taco Seasoning is a straightforward blend of common spices that brings a smoky, slightly spicy kick to Mexican-inspired dishes. The mixture includes chili powder as a base, complemented by the smoky notes of paprika and the earthiness of cumin and oregano. A small amount of cayenne adds heat, balanced by salt and fresh-ground black pepper. The blend is easy to mix and can be customized with optional garlic or onion powder depending on the cook's preference. It can be used directly on meats, beans, or vegetables to season tacos or other recipes requiring a robust seasoning. Storing it in an airtight container preserves its freshness for future use.
Ingredients
- 1 Tbsp chili powder $0.30
- 1 tsp smoked paprika $0.10
- 1 tsp cumin $0.10
- 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper $0.02
- 1/2 tsp oregano $0.05
- 1/2 tsp salt $0.05
- 1/2 tsp black pepper $0.05, 15 cranks; fresh
Instructions
- Combine everything in a small bowl and stir until evenly mixed. Use immediately, or store in an air-tight container, away from heat and sunlight, until ready to use.
Notes
- You can add 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder or onion powder to the blend if not using fresh garlic or onion in your dish.
- For a saucier taco filling, stir 1/2 teaspoon cornstarch and 1/3 cup water into your meat or beans after seasoning.
