Homemade Tartar Sauce
Description
Homemade Tartar Sauce is prepared by mixing mayonnaise with Dijon mustard, freshly squeezed lemon juice, salt, black pepper, dried dill, and optionally a hint of cayenne pepper for mild heat. Finely diced dill pickles and capers are folded in to add texture and distinctive flavor. The sauce is refrigerated for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld, resulting in a balanced, creamy condiment with acidity, herbaceousness, and subtle briny accents from the pickles and capers.
This sauce is typically served with fried or grilled seafood such as fish and chips, crab cakes, or shrimp. Its creamy yet tangy profile complements the flavors of seafood and adds moisture and zest to these dishes.
It stores well in the refrigerator for up to 7 days in an airtight container. Stir before serving, and it is not recommended to freeze as separation can occur.
Ingredients
- ½ cup mayonnaise
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice freshly squeezed
- ⅛ teaspoon salt
- ⅛ teaspoon black pepper
- ¼ teaspoon dill dried
- ⅛ teaspoon cayenne pepper optional
- 1 tablespoon dill pickles finely diced
- 1 tablespoon capers

Notes
- Let the sauce rest refrigerated for 30 minutes to improve flavor melding.
