Homemade Tartar Sauce

This Homemade Tartar Sauce combines mayonnaise with Dijon mustard, lemon juice, dill, and finely diced dill pickles and capers to yield a tangy and flavorful condiment. The blend of herbs, citrus, and savory elements creates a creamy sauce with subtle sharpness and briny notes. It enhances seafood dishes and other foods that pair well with a bright, herbaceous sauce.

Description

Homemade Tartar Sauce is prepared by mixing mayonnaise with Dijon mustard, freshly squeezed lemon juice, salt, black pepper, dried dill, and optionally a hint of cayenne pepper for mild heat. Finely diced dill pickles and capers are folded in to add texture and distinctive flavor. The sauce is refrigerated for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld, resulting in a balanced, creamy condiment with acidity, herbaceousness, and subtle briny accents from the pickles and capers.

This sauce is typically served with fried or grilled seafood such as fish and chips, crab cakes, or shrimp. Its creamy yet tangy profile complements the flavors of seafood and adds moisture and zest to these dishes.

It stores well in the refrigerator for up to 7 days in an airtight container. Stir before serving, and it is not recommended to freeze as separation can occur.

  • ¼ teaspoon dill dried
  • teaspoon cayenne pepper optional

  • 1 tablespoon capers

Instructions
