Homemade Waffles

Homemade Waffles are made from all-purpose flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, milk, vegetable oil, and eggs, flavored with vanilla and almond extracts. The batter mixes wet and dry ingredients until combined, then cooks in a preheated waffle iron to produce waffles with a crisp exterior and tender inside. Keeping waffles warm on a wire rack preserves their texture.

Description

This waffle recipe starts by combining dry ingredients, including flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder. Wet ingredients—milk, eggs, vegetable oil, vanilla, and almond extract—are whisked separately before being blended with the dry mix just until combined, avoiding overmixing which could toughen the waffles.

The batter is poured into a preheated waffle iron, and waffles are cooked as directed by the appliance. Using a small amount of non-stick spray can help prevent sticking. Resting waffles on a wire rack placed over a baking sheet in a 200°F oven keeps them warm and crispy by preventing steam from softening the bottoms.

The combination of vanilla and almond extracts adds a subtle nutty aroma complementing the classic waffle taste. These waffles make a versatile breakfast or brunch foundation for toppings or syrups.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 3/4 cup milk whole
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil you may also use 1/4 cup vegetable oil and 1/4 cup melted butter
  • 2 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon almond extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat waffle iron.
  2.  In a medium-sized bowl combine flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder. Stir dry ingredients together so all ingredients are mixed together.
  3. In another bowl, combine milk, eggs, vegetable oil, vanilla, and almond extract. Whisk together wet ingredients until you have a uniform mixture.
  4. Pour wet ingredients into dry ingredients. Mix until the flour blend is incorporated. Do not overmix.
  5. Follow waffle iron instructions for cooking the waffle. If the batter is sticking to the waffle iron you may want to use a small amount of non-stick spray on the waffle iron.
  6. Keep waffles warm 200 degree oven by placing on a wire rack resting on a baking sheet. By resting the waffles on a wire wrack the bottom of the waffles will not steam, and they will remain crisp.
