Homemade Waffles Recipe

Homemade Waffles Recipe yields golden brown waffles using all-purpose flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, eggs, milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract. The batter combines dry and wet ingredients and rests briefly before cooking on a preheated waffle iron until crisp on the outside and tender inside. This approach produces waffles with a tender crumb and slight sweetness, suitable for breakfast served with various toppings or syrups.

Description

This recipe starts by preheating the waffle griddle. Dry ingredients including flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt are mixed together and can be prepared in advance. Separately, eggs, milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract are whisked, then combined with the dry mix. Allowing the batter to rest briefly helps with texture development. The waffle iron is sprayed with baking spray for the first batch only to prevent sticking.

Batter is ladled into the hot waffle iron and cooked until golden brown, approximately 3 to 3½ minutes in a Dash Waffle Iron. The cooked waffles have a crisp exterior and soft interior, characteristic of classic homemade waffles. This recipe produces a reliable waffle suitable for using a variety of toppings from syrup to fruit or butter.

The recipe highlights that waffle cook times can vary based on the iron used and encourages familiarity for best results. Keeping waffles warm in an oven's warm setting allows for serving multiple waffles fresh. Notes mention the versatility of using the waffle iron for low-carb or gluten-free variations like chaffles as well.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 Tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 2 egg large
  • 1 ½ cups milk
  • cup butter melted, unsalted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat waffle griddle.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. This can also be stored and made ahead for later.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract.
  4. Pour the milk mixture into the flour mixture and whisk until combined. Let sit for several minutes while iron heats up.
  5. Spray waffle iron with baking spray before the FIRST batch only. Ladle into preheated waffle iron and cook until golden brown. For the "DASH" brand, this will be about 3- 3 1/2 minutes each.
  6. Serve and enjoy.

Notes

  • Use a good quality waffle iron; cooking times vary by model.
  • Let batter sit a few minutes to improve texture before cooking.
  • Only spray the waffle iron with cooking spray before the first batch.
  • Keep waffles warm on a baking sheet in a warm oven until serving.
  • The recipe works with standard ingredients for classic waffles, adaptable to gluten-free or low-carb variations.
