Homemade White Cheddar Cheese Sauce

Homemade White Cheddar Cheese Sauce is a smooth, creamy sauce made from shredded cheddar cheese thickened with cornstarch and blended with evaporated milk and seasonings. The sauce cooks quickly on the stove, resulting in a dip-consistent cheese sauce when cooled, soft and pourable when hot, suitable for various uses like dipping or drizzling.

Description

This cheese sauce combines sharp white cheddar and cornstarch, which helps stabilize and thicken the melted cheese. Evaporated milk adds creaminess without diluting flavor. Seasoned with garlic powder, kosher salt, black pepper, and optional cayenne pepper, the sauce carries subtle spice and savory depth. Cooking the mixture over medium heat with frequent whisking melts the cheese evenly and prevents lumps, producing a smooth texture in about five minutes.

When hot, the sauce is pourable and similar in texture to nacho cheese, useful for immediate serving. As it cools, it thickens to a dip consistency, which makes it versatile for snacks and toppings. The preparation requires no additional dairy or roux, relying on cornstarch as the sole thickener.
