Honey Baked Ham
Description
The Honey Baked Ham uses a fully cooked ham that is warmed and flavored through a slow baking process. Scoring the surface helps the glaze, made from ginger ale, brown sugar, honey, cider vinegar, minced garlic, and Dijon mustard, to coat and penetrate the ham. The glaze is simmered and reduced to concentrate its sweetness and tang. During the final bake, the ham is repeatedly basted with the glaze to create a moist and flavorful outer layer. After resting, the ham is sliced and served with the reserved glaze which adds richness to each bite.
The ham slices can be served as a centerpiece for a holiday meal or any special occasion. The garlic and Dijon notes provide a subtle savory depth balancing its sweet glaze. It pairs well with traditional sides like roasted vegetables or mashed potatoes.
For easier cleanup, the roasting pan can be lined with foil. Leftover ham can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or frozen for 2–3 months. Alternatively, a spiral ham can be used by skipping scoring and placing it cut-side down in the pan.
Ingredients
- 8-10 lb ham fully cooked, bone-in
- 2 1/4 c ginger ale
- 1 c. brown sugar packed
- 3 Tbsp honey
- 4 1/2 tsp cider vinegar
- 2 garlic minced, cloves
- 1 1/2 tsp Dijon mustard
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 325 degrees F.
- Place ham on a rack in a shallow roasting pan. Score the surface of the ham, making diamond shapes 1/2 in. deep.
- Baked uncovered at 325 degrees fro 1 1/2 hours.
- Meanwhile, in a small saucepan combine ginger ale, brown sugar, honey and vinegar. Bring to a boil. Cook until glaze is reduced by half, about 15 minutes. Reduce heat. Stir in remaining ingredients and cook for an additional 5 minutes. Remove from heat. Set aside 1 c. for sauce.
- Baste ham with some of the remaining glaze. Bake 30 minutes longer or until a meat thermometer reads 140 degrees F. During the last 30 minutes make sure to baste ham two more times with remaining glaze.
- Remove from oven and let stand for 10 minutes before slicing. Serve with reserved sauce.
Notes
- Use a smoked fully cooked ham to simply reheat and glaze for flavor infusion.
- Baking the ham uncovered allows the glaze to caramelize and form a sticky crust.
- Score the ham surface in diamond shapes about 1/2 inch deep to help the glaze penetrate the meat.
- Baste the ham multiple times during the last 30 minutes of baking to keep it moist and flavorful.
- Line the roasting pan with foil for easier cleanup.
- You can substitute a spiral ham by placing it cut side down and following the same glaze steps without scoring.
- Leftovers keep well refrigerated for up to 5 days and can be frozen for 2 to 3 months.
