Honey Baked Ham Recipe

This Honey Baked Ham features a spiral-cut ham coated in a honey glaze and a spiced sugar crust. The glaze combines warm spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and smoked paprika with honey and sugar, creating a balance of sweetness and aromatic depth. Baking and broiling steps yield a caramelized exterior while keeping the meat tender and juicy inside, making it suitable for holiday dinners or special occasions.

Description

The Honey Baked Ham Recipe starts with an 8-pound spiral-cut ham brushed with honey and baked covered until heated through. A spiced sugar glaze is prepared by boiling sugar with onion powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, cloves, and smoked paprika. This glaze is poured over the ham, which is then placed under the broiler in two stages, resulting in a bubbly, caramelized crust. The combination of sweet honey and warm spices gives the ham a rich, layered flavor profile.

The ham's spiral cut allows the glaze to penetrate between slices, adding flavor to every bite. The broiling step adds a slight crispness to the sugar crust contrasting with the tender meat. This recipe is well-suited to serve as a centerpiece for holiday meals or festive gatherings, paired with side dishes such as roasted vegetables or potatoes.

Using a meat thermometer is essential to ensure the ham reaches an internal temperature of 140 degrees Fahrenheit for safe consumption. The recipe notes emphasize boiling the sugar mixture for exactly one minute to avoid hardening the glaze. Serving the ham immediately after cooking preserves the texture of the crisp sugar coating. Leftovers can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to three days.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 8 lb ham spiral cut
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon cloves ground
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • cooking spray
  • herbs fresh, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Coat a 9" x 13" pan with cooking spray.
  2. Place the ham cut side down in the pan and pour the honey over the top. Cover the pan with foil.
  3. Bake for 2 hours or until a thermometer inserted into the ham registers 140 degrees F. Remove the ham from the oven and preheat the broiler.
  4. Place the sugar, onion powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, cloves and smoked paprika in a medium sized pan along with 1/2 cup of drippings from the pan or water.
  5. Stir to combine the sugar and liquid then bring to a boil. Boil for exactly one minute.
  6. Pour half the glaze over the ham and place the ham under the broiler. Broil for 1-2 minutes or until glaze starts bubbling.
  7. Remove the ham from the oven and pour the remaining glaze over the ham. Broil for 1-2 minutes more.
  8. Remove the ham from the oven and separate the slices. Transfer the ham to a platter and serve, garnished with herbs if desired.
