Honey BBQ Chicken

Honey BBQ Chicken uses grilled chicken breasts basted with a homemade sauce combining ketchup, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, honey, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, soy sauce, chili powder, and sautéed garlic. The sauce is simmered to develop flavor and applied during grilling to create a sticky, flavorful glaze. The chicken is cooked over medium-high heat to retain juiciness and develop grill marks.

Description

The Honey BBQ Chicken recipe starts by preparing a sauce in which garlic is briefly sautéed before adding liquids and seasonings that balance sweetness, acidity, and tang. Simmering the sauce concentrates flavors, and half is reserved for basting and serving. Chicken breasts are pounded for even thickness to ensure uniform cooking on the grill.

Grilling at medium-high heat with occasional basting allows the chicken to cook thoroughly, develop a caramelized glaze, and stay moist. Turning only once prevents drying out. The result is juicy chicken breasts coated with a glossy honey BBQ sauce that is sweet with a mild tang and a hint of spice from chili powder.

The finished dish can be served hot, with extra sauce on the side for dipping. It pairs well with classic side dishes like grilled vegetables, salads, or potatoes for a balanced meal suited to summer cookouts or casual dinners.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 6 chicken breast

For the sauce:

  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon garlic minced
  • 3/4 cup ketchup
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar firmly packed
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons yellow mustard
  • 2 teaspoons soy sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder

Instructions

Honey BBQ Sauce:

  1. In a medium saucepan over medium-high heat, warm the vegetable oil. Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute.
  2. Add the remaining sauce ingredients and bring to a boil.
  3. Reduce heat and simmer about 15 minutes. Set aside. Pour 1/2 of the sauce in a small bowl for basting the chicken.

Grilling the Chicken:

  1. I like to pound the chicken a little before I grill it so it cooks evenly. Grill the chicken on medium high heat, you want to cook it 7 to 10 minutes on each side. It tastes best if you only turn it once. Baste generously with the small bowl of sauce every 3 or 4 minutes.
  2. Serve with the remaining sauce on the side for dipping.
