Honey BBQ Wings
Description
Chicken wings are first seasoned with olive oil, salt, and black pepper, then air fried at 400°F for 15 minutes to achieve a crispy exterior while keeping the meat tender inside. A simple sauce combining honey and barbecue sauce is prepared separately.
After initial cooking, the wings are tossed in the sauce, placed back into the air fryer basket lined with parchment paper to prevent sticking and burning, and cooked an additional 5-7 minutes to set the glaze. The sauce can be quite sticky, so lining the cooking surface is recommended. Letting the wings rest after cooking helps cool the sauce and avoid burns.
Alternatively, an oven-baked method involves tossing wings with flour, baking powder, and seasoning, refrigerating, then baking on a sprayed rack at 425°F until crispy. The sauce can be enhanced with garlic, sriracha, ginger, or hot pepper flakes for added flavor. Wings should be cooked in a single layer to ensure even crisping and may be cooked in batches, reheated briefly in the air fryer before serving.
Ingredients
- 2 pounds chicken wings
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- salt to taste
- black pepper to taste
- ¼ cup honey
- ¼ cup barbecue sauce
Instructions
In the Air Fryer
- Preheat the air fryer to 400°F.
- Toss wings with olive oil, salt, and pepper. And place in the air fryer basket in a single layer. Cook for 15 minutes.
- While wings are cooking, mix honey & bbq sauce in a small bowl.
- After 15 minutes, remove the wings from the air fryer and toss them with the sauce.
- I recommend lining the air fryer basket with parchment paper when adding the sauced wings Place the wings back in the air fryer basket and cook for an additional 5-7 minutes.
- Let rest a few minutes before serving (the sauce will be very hot right after cooking).
Notes
- When baking in the oven, toss wings with flour and baking powder and refrigerate uncovered for 30 minutes to 4 hours for crispier skin.
- Line the air fryer basket or baking pan with parchment paper after saucing the wings to help prevent sticky residue and ease cleanup.
- Avoid running the air fryer with parchment paper alone as it can blow around and burn; place wings on top to weigh it down.
- Cooking wings in a single layer is essential for even crisping; cook in batches if needed.
- Sauces can be customized with garlic, sriracha, fresh ginger, or hot pepper flakes for extra flavor.
- Reheat cooked wings in the air fryer at 400°F for 2-3 minutes before serving if cooking in batches.
