Honey Garlic Chicken Wings

Honey Garlic Chicken Wings are baked wings coated with a rub of salt, pepper, smoked paprika, and garlic powder, then tossed in a honey garlic sauce made from soy sauce, mirin, honey, garlic, and ginger. The wings are baked until crispy, coated in the sticky sauce, and finished under the broiler for a caramelized glaze. Sesame seeds add a nutty garnish.

Description

These Honey Garlic Chicken Wings start with wings rubbed thoroughly in a spice blend including smoked paprika and garlic powder, then brushed with olive oil and baked to develop crispy skin. The honey garlic sauce is simmered on the stovetop, blending soy sauce, mirin, honey, sesame oil, minced garlic, ginger, and optional red pepper flakes for subtle heat, thickened slightly with cornstarch.

After the initial baking, the wings are tossed in the flavorful sauce and returned to the oven to allow the sauce to cling and further caramelize. A brief broiling step enhances the glaze's sheen and texture. Once cooled slightly, the sauce thickens further, creating sticky, flavorful wings. Toasted sesame seeds sprinkled on top provide texture and a visual finish.

This method yields wings with a balance of sweet, savory, and mild heat, with a pleasing crispy yet sticky texture suitable for serving as an appetizer or main dish. The hands-off baking method is practical for cooking large quantities, with the sauce elevating the wing flavor.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 30 chicken wings
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

Rub:

  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

Honey Garlic Sauce:

  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons mirin
  • 1/2 cup honey or maple syrup, or agave
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 4 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tablespoon ginger minced
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes optional
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch

Garnish:

  • sesame seeds

Instructions

Wings:

  1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with foil and place parchment paper on top.
  2. Pat dry wings with paper towels until completely dry.
  3. Combine all the rub ingredients in a large bowl, add the wings and toss to combine. Brush with olive oil.
  4. Arrange the chicken wings in one layer. If needed, use two baking sheets. Bake for 35 minutes, turning after 20 minutes on the other side.

Honey Garlic Sauce:

  1. In the meantime, combine the sauce ingredients in a small pan over medium heat. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer for about 10 minutes, or until the sauce has slightly thickened and coats the back of a spoon.

Combine Wings with the Sauce:

  1. Remove the wings from the oven, toss them with the sauce, and return them to the oven for another 10 minutes, turning them after 5 minutes on the other side, brushing with more sauce.
  2. Broil for a few minutes.
  3. Allow the wings to cool for 10 minutes. The sauce will thicken as it cools. You can brush the wings with more sauce.

Serve:

  1. Serve the wings with your favorite dipping sauce and garnish with sesame seeds.
