Honey Garlic Chicken Wings
Description
The recipe begins by cutting whole chicken wings into drumettes and flats, seasoning with salt and pepper, and baking at 425°F on parchment paper until they develop a crispy exterior, about 35 to 45 minutes. Meanwhile, a sauce is prepared by simmering water, molasses, honey, minced garlic, onion powder, brown sugar, salt, and pepper until it reduces by half and thickens into a shiny glaze.
Once baked, the wings are tossed with the honey garlic sauce until fully coated, allowing the sauce to cling to the crispy skin. Garnishes like chopped green onions add a fresh contrast and subtle sharpness. Wings can be served hot as an appetizer or part of a meal.
Patting wings dry before baking helps achieve crispiness. Adjust the sauce's heat with chili flakes or sriracha if desired, and molasses can be replaced with brown sugar or maple syrup as a substitute. Doubling the sauce recipe yields extra glaze for more coverage.
Ingredients
Chicken Wings
- 2 pounds chicken wings rinsed and pat dry
- 1 teaspoon salt or to taste
- 1 teaspoon black pepper or to taste
- 3 green onions chopped, optional
Honey Garlic Sauce
- ¼ cup water
- 1 tablespoon molasses
- 3 tablespoons honey
- 6 cloves garlic finely minced
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar packed
- ½ teaspoon salt or to taste
- 1 teaspoon black pepper or to taste
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 425℉. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- If your chicken wings are whole, cut them into 3 pieces at the joints and discard wing tips. Salt and pepper the wings and then place them on the baking sheet.
- Transfer the baking sheet to the oven and bake them for 35 to 45 minutes depending on how crispy you want them.
- Mix the rest of the ingredients together in a small saucepan, then over medium heat bring the sauce to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer until mixture reduces and thickens, about 5 minutes, it should reduce to about half.
- Place the wings in a bowl and drizzle the sauce over the wings. Toss the wings in the bowl until each wing is fully coated.
- Garnish with green onions, if preferred, and serve hot.
Notes
- Pat chicken wings dry with paper towels before seasoning and baking to increase crispiness.
- Add red pepper flakes or sriracha to the sauce for spicier wings.
- Substitute molasses with additional brown sugar or maple syrup if unavailable.
- Garnish with chopped green onions, cilantro, or parsley for added flavor and color.
- Double the sauce amount if you prefer wings extra saucy, and adjust spices accordingly.
